Neobuxbaumia laui is a species of the genus Neobuxbaumia in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Neobuxbaumia laui grows with three to six parallel, upright shoots from 7 to 12 meters in height. A clear trunk 2 meters long and 10 centimeters in diameter is formed. The dark green, smooth shoots are 4 to 6 meters long and have a diameter of up to 10 centimeters. The 29 to 31 ribs are not dented between the areoles . The circular areoles are initially grayish white and later turn dark gray to blackish gray. They are 3.5 to 5 millimeters apart. The ten or so spines , of which three to four are longer than the others, cannot be divided into central and radial spines. The thin, needle-like, straight and flexible thorns are black to grayish white. They are up to 3 centimeters long.

The numerous flowers appear near the shoot tips, open at night and stay open well into the next morning. They are reddish white, up to 3.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 1.3 centimeters. The ellipsoid, red fruits are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long and reach the same diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Neobuxbaumia laui is common in the Mexican state of Oaxaca near Santiago Nuyoo .

The first description as Carnegiea laui was in 1992 by Paul V. Heath . However, according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature , the name was invalid (Article 37.4). David Richard Hunt placed the species in 1997 in the genus Neobuxbaumia .
