Neocaridina is a genus of freshwater shrimp (Atyidae). The species of the genus wereseparatedfrom the genus Caridina because of their different external sexual organs.

features

Male representatives of the genus carry outwardly widening, pear-shaped endopods (paddle-like branches of the swimming legs). Any existing internal appendix ( appendix with a tick on the inside of the endopod) attaches to the base of the endopod. In contrast to this, the endopods of Caridina species are usually more leaf-shaped and narrower distally, with the internal appendix at its outer end. All Neocaridina belong to the so-called specialized reproductive type, which means that the larval development takes place predominantly within the relatively large eggs. The hatching larvae are already equipped with walking legs, adapted to a soil-oriented way of life and can reach the juvenile stage within one to a few moults.

species

Currently, 20 species and nine subspecies are grouped together in Neocaridina .

Some members of this genus, such as the dorsal shrimp ( Neocaridina davidi , syn .: Neocaridina heteropoda ) and the Neocaridina palmata , which occurs in different color variants, have achieved significant importance as pets in the aquarium hobby. Other species are reproduced as fish feed in their areas of origin.

As with Caridina , some species of this genus are traded and bred, the systematic status of which is unclear. This includes, for example, under the name Weißperlengarnele spread white cultured form of a gray-blue Neocaridina -Art, formerly known as Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis was called, but today Neocaridina palmata is counted.
