Caridina is the most diverse species from the family of fresh water shrimps (Atyidae), more than 260 species are known. Type species is Caridina typus . This group of small shrimp is extremely complex and as early as 1925 Eugène Louis Bouvier triedto subdivide them into individual groups based on morphological characteristics. This classification is still used occasionally, but its validity is only partially valid. The assignment of individual species is also made more difficult by the fact that some older species descriptions are incomplete or interpretable. In the following the system appliesthis genus as in need of revision and a future reorganization is likely. According to genetic data, the genus is polyphyletic.

Systematics

While some species are traded and bred commercially, their systematic status is unclear. So z. B. the "species" traded as green dwarf shrimp ( Caridina cf. babaulti ) placed in the vicinity of Caridina babaulti .

trade

Caridina species have gained in importance in the aquarium hobby in recent years . A number of species and cultivated forms are now available in the pet shop. The terms used in trade do not always allow conclusions to be drawn about the actual species belonging to the specimens on offer.
