Neocrepidodera ferruginea belongs to the flea beetles (tribe Alticini, subfamily Galerucinae) from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). The beetle species is called Wheat Flea Beetle ("wheat flea beetle").

features

The yellow-brown beetles are oval in shape. They are usually 3–3.5 mm in size, more rarely 2.4 or 4 mm. The relatively large eyes are blue-black. The relatively wide pronotum is not narrowed at the rear angles. Both the pronotum furrow and the concluding longitudinal lines are clearly pronounced. The wing covers are provided with regularly arranged rows of dots.

distribution

Neocrepidodera ferruginea is a species native to the Palearctic Ocean . The species is widespread in Europe and very common in Central Europe. Their occurrence extends in the east to central Siberia. The species was introduced in North America. There it occurs in the eastern part of Canada.

Way of life

The adult beetles are usually seen between late May and mid-September. The typical habitat of the beetles are open areas, especially cereal-growing areas and meadows. Their host and food plants include various sweet grasses (Poaceae) and composites (Asteraceae), including thistles ( Cirsium ), clover ( Trifolium ), the great nettle ( Urtica dioica ) and vetches ( Vicia ). The eggs are usually laid in July. After about 3–4 weeks, the larvae hatch and mines in the stalks of their host plants . The larvae overwinter. Pupation occurs in May and June and takes 2–3 weeks.

The beetle species is considered to be a grain pest of little economic importance.

Similar species

The beetles of the related species Neocrepidodera transversa look similar, but are generally larger and, in contrast to Neocrepidodera ferruginea, have no regular rows of dots on the elytra .
