Neofit Bosweli

Neofit Bosweli even Neofit of Hilendar ( Bulgarian Неофит Бозвели , * around 1785 in Kotel ; † 4. June 1848 in Chile Dark Loster on Athos ) was a Bulgarian priest, writer and teacher.

He was one of the leaders in the Bulgarian church struggle for the independence of the Bulgarian church from the sovereignty of the Greek patriarchate of Constantinople . In 1844 he wrote to the Sublime Porte together with Ilarion Makariopolski , in which the appointment of bishops who would be elected by the Bulgarian people, the introduction of a Bulgarian-language liturgy and the election of a Bulgarian representative in the government or the establishment of one Bulgarian Church in Istanbul . Under pressure from the Patriarch, both were banished to the Chilean monastery, where Neofit Bosweli died in 1848.

Neofit Bosweli wrote textbooks but also poems and dialogues. The Bozveli Peak in Antarctica is named after him.
