Nepenthes (software)

Nepenthes is a so-called low interaction honeypot software that provides an emulation of known vulnerabilities in operating systems, user software and server software. It has not been further developed since 2009, instead there is a follow-up project Dionaea .

The software has a modular structure and consists of:

  • Interfaces for emulating vulnerabilities
  • Interfaces for downloading files via communication protocols
  • Interfaces for emulating shell code
  • Interfaces for generating events

Nepenthes can be operated as a daemon or started manually and enables, among other things, the collection of malware , viruses and Trojans . The focus is on Trojans , viruses and malware, which are mainly distributed in order to create botnets .
