Nepomuk statue

The Nepomuk statue in Rheine is a statue that reproduces Johannes Nepomuk .

description

The statue is attributed to the sculptor Johann Adolf Sasse (around 1690–1755) from Coesfeld . It stands at the transition from the Baroque to the Rococo and is one of the highest quality depictions of the saint in the former Duchy of Münster . The flanking putti of the original group of figures and the crucifix in the saint's hands are no longer there.

history

In 1735 Johann Nepomuk Lethmate and his wife Johanna Magdalena Wettendorff had the statue erected on the Emsbrücke . As rent master of the Rheine-Bevergern office , Lethmate had to manage the bridge toll, among other things.

When the Emsbrücke was blown up on April 2, 1945, the statue broke. The torso was recovered, but the head was lost. It was not found in the river until the bridge was renewed in 1981. The destroyed shoulder area, which was originally covered with folds in the garment, was added and the head put back on. The figure was copied and the reconstructed statue was put back on the Nepomuk Bridge . The original from 1735 is in the Falkenhof Museum .
