Percy Pursglove

Percy Pursglove (* around 1980) is a British jazz musician ( double bass , trumpet , composition )

Pursglove studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire , where he earned his Bachelor with Honors; he then continued his studies on a scholarship at The New School in New York City. During this time he played in the Duke Ellington Orchestra ( Ghost Band ) and in the René Marie Big Band. After his return to Britain he worked as a freelance musician; he also teaches at the Birmingham Conservatoire and directs the National Youth Jazz Wales Orchestra. He is also the artistic director of the Harmonic Festival.

From the 2000s he worked in the British jazz and improvisation scene. The first recordings were made in Birmingham with the Fat Chops Big Band ( A Nightingale Sang ). In the following years he mostly played in the groups of saxophonist Paul Dunmall , such as his Brass Project , Quartet and Sextet, also in the formations TG Collective, Blue Shroud Band, Maylight and with Hans Koller , Gail Brand , Ramón López , Mike Gibbs ( Play Gil Evans , 2012), Barry Guy , Jim Rattigan, Jonathan Silk and Reuben Fowler . He has also performed with Evan Parker , Steve Swallow , Mark Dresser , Dan Weiss , Chris Potter , Django Bates , Bill Frisell , the WDR Big Band , Vince Mendoza , Thomas Morgan , Peter Erskine , Claudio Roditi , Phil Woods and Matt Brewer . In the field of jazz he was involved in 23 recording sessions between 2003 and 2019, according to Tom Lord . As a studio musician, he also worked with Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum . In 2020 he belongs to a collaborative quartet with Paul Dunmall, Olie Brice and Jeff Williams ; he also became a member of the NDR Big Band .

Pursglove teaches as a tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire , but also at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music . He is the musical director of the National Youth Jazz Wales and has instructed the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and the National Youth Jazz Collective .
