New and upgraded Mannheim – Karlsruhe line

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The new and upgraded Mannheim – Karlsruhe line denotes an expansion project within the framework of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan to expand the railway infrastructure between Mannheim and Karlsruhe by two more tracks. The project has been in the planning phase since 2019.

background

With the increase in rail traffic, especially freight traffic, on the railway axis along the Rhine between the North Sea ports, Switzerland and Italy (axis No. 24 of the Trans-European Networks ), the need arose to expand the rail infrastructure in this corridor. With the new Rhine / Main – Rhine / Neckar line , two additional tracks will be built north of Mannheim-Waldhof in the coming years, with the upgraded and new line Karlsruhe – Basel two additional tracks south of Karlsruhe. As part of the Middle Rhine corridor study , it was found in 2015 that the existing rail infrastructure between Mannheim and Karlsruhe, in particular between Graben-Neudorf and Karlsruhe, is insufficient to accommodate the expected additional traffic. For this reason, a project to upgrade this section to four tracks was included in the federal transport infrastructure plan. In the course of further capacity investigations in the Mannheim / Karlsruhe area, it was found that critical capacity bottlenecks are also to be expected between Mannheim and Graben-Neudorf, so that the expansion project was extended to the entire route between Mannheim and Karlsruhe.

Spatial demarcation

The planning extends north-south from Mannheim-Waldhof, the end point of the new Rhine / Main – Rhine / Neckar line to the Basheide junction near Durmersheim , south of Karlsruhe, the beginning of the new and upgraded Karlsruhe – Basel line. In an east-west direction, a search area was defined for a possible route, which extends from the Rhine floodplains in the west to the transition from the Upper Rhine plain to the Kraichgau in the east.

Project flow

Planning for the project started in 2019. First, a preferred variant for the route should be sought.
