"New Schützenhalle" Lüdenscheid

The Neue Schützenhalle in Lüdenscheid is the largest event location in the city. It is not only used by the rifle society responsible for the construction, but is also important for public life. For a long time it was the most important local venue for theater performances or concerts.

prehistory

Already in 1860 the "Lüdenscheider Schützengesellschaft 1506 e.V." a first massive festival hall on the Loher ridge, later called the "Alte Schützenhalle". It was rebuilt and expanded several times and only demolished in the early 1980s. After a significant increase in population, the new shooting hall discussed here was built in 1899/1900 at the opposite end of the neighboring Schützenplatz . When it was inaugurated around 1900, it was considered one of the largest festival halls in Westphalia.

architecture

Motif window

It is an elaborately designed building with remnants of the originally rich sculptural jewelry in the style of the neo-baroque . The hall wing has the structure of a basilica ; a wide central section is flanked on both sides by lower aisles. Flat arches, which are supported by columns with gilded Corinthian capitals , undertake the construction of the central nave. To the west, on the front facing Schützenplatz , is a two-storey part of the building with a flat roof. In particular, the central projection with the main entrance once had rich sculptural ornamentation, as did the rear gable of the central part of the hall, which, however, was largely removed. Instead, a single-storey extension for a restaurant with a wider main entrance was added. Except for the slightly rounded roofing of the entrance, it has no design requirements. A particularly striking component is the three-storey tower, to the north following the hall porch described above. It stands out through a curved Art Nouveau hood with a lantern , also in Art Nouveau forms . The lantern rises above a small platform that protrudes over the hood. Allegedly, the architecture of the Neue Schützenhalle was based on that of the British House of Lords, which burned down in 1834 .

use

Before the Lüdenscheid Culture House was built, the Neue Schützenhalle was the most important location for major cultural events in the city (theater performances, concerts, etc.). In addition, it was always used for social events of the shooting club, e.g. B. the big ball on the occasion of the shooting festival or New Year's Eve balls. During the First World War, a hospital was set up in the large ballroom. Today the building is occasionally used for events by private companies, religious communities or for exhibitions and small trade fairs. There is a restaurant in the porch at Schützenplatz. The large hall can be furnished with 1400 seats; The foyer holds 200 more.

Location and environment

The Neue Schützenhalle is dominant at one of the highest points of the Loh ridge, southeast of Lüdenscheid city center. So it can be seen with its tower in large parts of the city area and also forms a landmark . To the west of the building is Loher Schützenplatz , the venue for the folk festival on the occasion of the Loher Schützenfest . In 1991 the square was raised to a uniform level and redesigned. In this context, an avenue facing the Neue Schützenhalle was planted. At the end of the Schützenplatz opposite the new Schützenhalle, the old Schützenhalle had been located since 1860 , a brick building with neo-Romanesque and antique shapes. Most recently it was used as a gym. After neglect of maintenance and neglect, the building, which was important for the city's history, had to be demolished at the beginning of the 1980s.
