The New City Library Augsburg is a municipal library of the city of Augsburg . It is one of the four large Augsburg libraries with a focus on educational, information and cultural missions. The inventory includes 170,000 books and 190 subscription magazines and newspapers as well as other media such as CDs and 6,700 audio books.
history
In 1920 the public library with 10,000 books was opened as a department of the Augsburg State and City Library, founded in 1537 . The public library became independent 1953. 1978 was renamed the National Library in Public Library . On the initiative of the offensive for a new city library , there was a successful public petition for a “new city library” in 2005 . It was possible to dispense with a referendum after the city administration responded to the concerns of the citizens' initiative. In 2007 the foundation stone was laid for a new house on Ernst-Reuter-Platz, and on June 20, 2009, the city library began operations in the new building.

Reading Island
In 2010, reading islands were opened at the first schools, which are both organizationally and technically closely linked to the city library. The aim of these modern school libraries is to offer a high-quality, attractive basic range of media for all users and to familiarize students, teachers and parents with the basic techniques of library work.
