The New Synagogue in Tarnów

The New Synagogue of Tarnów ( Polish : Nowa Synagoga w Tarnowie ) was located on the corner of Nowa and Waryńskiego Streets in the Galician city of Tarnów . The building was designed by the Kraków architect Władysław Ekielski .

history

Construction of the synagogue began in 1865 (at that time Tarnów was part of Austria-Hungary ), but was soon stopped for several decades due to lack of funds. The construction work was finally completed in 1908. The synagogue was officially opened on August 18, 1908, on the 78th birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I - which is why it was also called the Franz Joseph Synagogue or the New Jubilee Synagogue .

In November 1939 she was set on fire; the fire burned for three days, but the structure did not collapse. A few days later the burned-out building was blown up.

In September 1993 the Committee for the Protection of Monuments of Jewish Culture in Tarnów put a memorial plaque on a building on the corner of Nowa and Waryńskiego with the inscription in Polish and English: “Here was the largest synagogue, known as the" New one. " Synagogue"."

architecture

The brick building was erected on a rectangular floor plan and had three aisles . The bulbous gold dome that towered over the city was striking.
