The New Provision Office in Mainz was built from 1899 to 1906 according to plans by the Military Building Office of the German Empire under Military Governor Paul von Collas .

history

As part of the city's expansion, the Mainz fortress also expanded . In the new town , new barracks, such as the Alice barracks (today police headquarters) as well as administrative and supply facilities were built. After the fortress ring was expanded to include the city with the Rheingauwall , the building complex was supposed to ensure the supply of the barracks in the north-western part of the city.

The proximity to the newly built port was logistically advantageous, as bulk goods such as grain could be easily delivered by ship, the main means of transport at the time. A siding of the port railway established the connection to the port and the main train station .

The attachment

The facility consists of several storage buildings, which are only separated from the port by the Rheinallee, and an army bakery , which supplemented the existing facility in the army canning factory . The originally largest building in the facility, a seven-storey oat store on Rheinallee, fell victim to World War II and was demolished except for the ground floor that still exists today. The flour and grain magazine stood on the city side (south). There were official apartment buildings on the west side.

Industrial culture

The Heeresbäckerei has a representative facade, which is defined by towers with steep pyramid roofs. The exposed brickwork is made of yellowish bricks. The flour and grain store and the official apartment buildings as utility buildings had simple brick facades. The plans of the military building authority were not exclusively intended, but also take up the formal language of the time, a transition period between Belle Époque and Art Nouveau . The design requirement is also reflected in the large iron mesh fence from 1903 that delimits the site. In its extraordinary dimensions, which are not inferior to those of a factory, the New Provision Office illustrates the important role of the military for the city.

Todays use

The New Provision Office is still used today as a warehouse for the Bundeswehr service center in Mainz, but it is to be converted . Offices and lofts are planned for future use . The Mainz-Neustadt district wants to develop the facility as a cultural facility and district center with appropriate commercial use.

The area of the Mainz customs and inland port in the immediate vicinity is to be established as a new city district. In the context of the overall city planning, the Rhine bank areas have priority. A multifunctional mix of uses between living, working, leisure and culture is desirable. Overall, the Neustadt should be upgraded.
