The New Castle ( Slovak Nový zámok ) is a fortress or watchtower in the central Slovak town of Banská Štiavnica . It is located southwest of the city center on Dievčenský vrch (German Frauenberg ), which is why the fortress is sometimes called the Maiden's Castle (Slovak Panenský hrad or Dievčenský hrad ).
history
The creation of the fortress is related to the occupation of parts of the Kingdom of Hungary after the Battle of Mohács . In addition to the reconstruction of the Gothic basilica into the fortress known today as the Old Castle , it was decided to build another fortress on the Frauenberg above the road towards the settlement of Windschacht ( Vindšachta in Slovak , today part of Štiavnické Bane ). This was given the name New Palace to distinguish it and was built between 1564 and 1571. It is essentially a large tower with four (originally two) corner bastions. Later on, the tower grew to the height of the fourth floor. The built fortress protected the route into the city from the south and east and was integrated into the city fortifications in two places. A fire station was also housed in the fortress, which had to indicate the time with a fanfare every quarter of an hour.
Current condition
The fortress has been preserved to this day and houses the Museum of the Fighting Against the Turks (Slovak Múzeum protitureckých bojov ).
