The New Palace is a palace complex with a park in the southeast Thuringian city of Bad Lobenstein .

The castle is located on the northern edge of the old town on Leonberger Platz. Today it is used as a museum and shows a collection with a focus on Reussian regional and coin history as well as temporary exhibitions. The park is freely accessible and serves as an inner-city green area behind the castle.

history

The old castle from 1601, which was badly damaged in a fire in 1714, stood in the center of Lobenstein. The remaining parts of the building were henceforth used as a malt house, while the princes of Reuss-Lobenstein , who had resided in Lobenstein since 1647, had a new castle built. It was built between 1714 and 1718 under Henry XV. von Reuß-Lobenstein (1674–1739) the New Palace in the baroque style outside the city walls. It was a residence until 1824, after which the Lobenstein line of the Reussians died out, so that their territory fell to Reuss-Ebersdorf . From then on, these princes called themselves von Reuss-Lobenstein-Ebersdorf . During the city fires in 1732, 1800 and 1862, the New Palace was damaged and rebuilt slightly differently. From 1996 to 1997 the palace, park and outbuildings were renovated. The west wing has been extensively renovated since 2008.

The castle consists of two buildings with a square floor plan (east and west wings), which are connected by a lower central building. In this connecting structure there is a passage that forms a visual axis with the pavilion in the park. The castle park (also known as the Herrengarten ) extends behind the castle over about 250 meters in length and 100 meters in width. The central axis is a meadow interrupted by the pavilion, which is flanked on both sides by avenues of trees with walking paths. The originally French-Baroque gardens developed into an English landscape park through the progressive growth of the trees by the middle of the 19th century .

The pavilion in the palace park is a square, two-story, late-baroque building, the eye-catcher of which is the eye-catching shutters. The Alte Wache on the other side of Leonberger Platz also belongs to the palace in a broader sense. It was once a guard post of the royal military and is a small, classical building that is extremely similar to the old guard in Greiz . The royal family's carriage shed is also opposite the palace. This simple, late baroque building is now used as a tourist information office for the town of Bad Lobenstein.
