New Isny city gate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New City Gate Isny ( spelling of the project: new city gate Isny ) was a project for the renovation of the old town of Isny in the Allgäu . On February 5, 2012, the citizens of the city finally decided against the project in a referendum .

Structure, construction costs and use

The Swiss architect Peter Zumthor was responsible for the design . He would have taken over the later planning. The construction costs were estimated at 20 million euros. The city gate would have been in Obertorstrasse, where the former Obertor was. There are still the following existing towers of the city fortifications in Isny: Diebsturm, Mühlturm, Blaserturm, Espantor and the Powder Tower.

The construction costs should have been financed entirely by friends, sponsors, official outfitters or partners of the project, similar to the Olympic principle. The city has incurred costs of 350,000 euros since 2010 due to project studies and advertising.

The main building material used should have been bricks made of glass, so-called glass bricks and black mortar . The tower resting on three pillars would have had a height of 35 meters. It would have been only the fourth tallest tower, but the most powerful tower in Isny in terms of diameter. The 250,000 glass bricks would have been built up in the old artisanal manner. A heat pump in the foundation of the tower, together with solar-assisted passive insulation , would have heated the tower in winter via glass-carrying pipes and cooled it in summer via these pipes.

The Espantor, an old city gate of Isny

The centerpiece of the tower would have been a room in the shape of a chestnut nut located above the panoramic restaurant 23 meters above the ground. This room would have seated 120 people. Access to the room would have been possible via stairs or an elevator.

The use of the space would have taken place in a culturally unique or extraordinary setting. In the opinion of the initiators of the building, these uses would have covered the subsequent costs of the building in the form of return flows through rental or entry fees.

On February 5, 2012 6,484 citizens of the 10,306 Isny citizens entitled to vote took part in the referendum. 4,657 voted against the construction and 1,814 voted in favor. Thus 72% voted against the building project, which corresponded to a turnout of 62.9%. The legal quorum would have been 2577 votes against. 13 votes were invalid.

After this referendum at Architects Zumthor, interested people from Stuttgart showed great curiosity about the project. So the new Isny city gate could ultimately be built in the state capital of Baden-Württemberg.
