Vitus Felix Rigl (* around 1717 , † after 1779 ) was a Swabian painter and fresco painter of the Rococo .

career

The origin of Vitus Felix Rigl (also Riegl or Riegel) is unknown. According to the graphic theses and doctoral sheets in Bamberg , Vitus Felix Rigl's life data can be narrowed down to before 1743 (marriage to Maria Regina Wolcker) and after 1779 (last mention). Schröder believes that he settled in Dillingen when he married the widow Maria Regina (Elisabeth) Wolcker in 1743. The entry in the Dillinger parish register reads: “1743 Nov. 26 marry D. Vincentius (!) Felix Ingel (above this word is written from a later hand: Rigel) pictor et vidua D. Maria Regina Wolckerin. Testes: D. Joa. Gg. Eisenschmid et Da. Yeah. Franck ”. Schröder concludes that the name was completely incorrectly entered and that the husband had not been in Dillingen for long. His name is not in the Dillingen baptismal register and before 1743 there was no family with this name in Dillingen.

Vitus Felix Rigl also took over Wolcker's house in Dillingen through his marriage to the widow of Matthias or Mätthäus Wolcker and moved to Augsburg in 1764. From 1743 to 1761 he was probably based in Dillingen. His last work is dated 1779: “According to the tax amount, his living conditions in Dillingen were modest; he also took on barrel and paint jobs. Presumably he had been a journeyman at Wolcker's and subsequently trained himself on the frescoes by Chr. Th. Scheffler in Dillingen and the surrounding area, the style of which his frescoes follow without, of course, reaching them. After all, none of the contemporary artists in Dillingen came close to him ”.

Between 1746 and 1755 six children were baptized in the parish church in Dillingen:

1. “1746 July 28 was baptized M. Anna, daughter of“ Vitus Felix Rigel ”and M. Regina. Godparents: D. Jos. Meichelbeck and DM Juliana Bab. de Emerich. (On May 13, 1759, the death register lists a praenobilis dominus Jos. Ant. Meichelböck, consiliarius camerae. Juliana von Emerich probably also belonged to the prince-bishop's court in Dillingen). "

2. “1747 Sept. 28 is baptized M. Victoria Regina, daughter of the same parents. Godparents: The same. "

3. “1749 Oct. 3 is baptized M. Anna Regina Theresia, daughter of the same parents. Sponsors as above. "

4. "1751 Aug. 4 is baptized Dominicus Valentin, son of" Vitus Anton Rigl "and Regina. Godparents as above. Apparently, Vitus Anton is identical to Vitus Felix Rigl. "

5. “1753 Jan. 10 is baptized Sebastian Felix, son of“ Felix Anton Rigl ”and Regina. Godparents as above. Felix Anton and Vitus Felix Rigl are without a doubt the same personality. "

6. “1755 June 12 Anton Bernhard, son of“ Vitus Felix Rigl ”and Regina Elisabeth is baptized. Sponsors: D. Vidua Maria Anna de Sartori, D. Jos. Ant. Meichlböck. "

The godparents of Rigl's children and his wife Maria Regina were high-ranking personalities, from which it can be concluded that the Rigl / Wolcker family in Dillingen was highly regarded. Rigl's wife, the widow of Matthäus Wolcker, died on June 14, 1761. After Schröder, nothing more can be learned about Rigl in Dillingen after the woman's death, and he suspects that Rigl left Dillingen.
