Donaualtheim is a district of Dillingen an der Donau in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , which connects to Dillingen in the north.

geography

Donaualtheim lies on the high terrace level on both sides of the Egau at an altitude of 432 meters. The district Donau Altheim participates in the 24-hectare conservation area of Egaulaufes between saddle accommodating and Donau Altheim.

Mills

  • To the west of the village is the Donaualtheimer Mühle, which was first mentioned in a document in 1258. It was part of the donation from Bishop Hartmann von Dillingen , the last descendant of the Counts of Dillingen , to the bishopric of Augsburg . The mill location is much older, however. Archaeological finds indicate a date in the 8th century. The current buildings, house and mill, date from 1890.
  • On the western edge of the village there was another mill on the Egau, which served as a grinding mill and was rebuilt in 1788, including the house. A gypsum mill is mentioned in 1845. A tinder mill was added later and was in operation until 1910. In 1921 a grinding mill was put into operation. The mill operation was stopped in 1954.

Desolation

  • The hamlet of Hofen is mentioned several times in the 14th century. It was presumably a development developed from Donaualtheim and was most recently owned by the Augsburg bishopric .
  • Haggenberg, which is documented between 1284 and 1316, lay northeast of Donaualtheim. It consisted of a castle with several farmsteads, after which a branch line of the Lords of Altheim was named.

history

The oldest archaeological finds go back to the Middle Stone Age and the Roman Age . The place, which was called Altheim until the 14th century , was first mentioned in writing in the middle of the 8th century in connection with a donation to the Fulda monastery . Donaualtheim is one of the earliest documented locations in the Dillingen district. The most important landlords in the High Middle Ages were, in addition to the Counts of Dillingen and the bishopric of Augsburg, as their successors, the Counts of Oettingen , who each gave their property there to the Lords of Altheim as a fief . The latter built a new castle northeast of the old castle, in the place of which is the parish church of St. Vitus , of which a stables have been preserved.

In the late Middle Ages, sovereignty and high jurisdiction lay with the Dukes of Bavaria and, from 1505, with the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg . After the lords of Altheim had branched out into several lines, the place passed to the noble family of the Häl, who owned the rulership until 1627. The Häl sold Donaualtheim to the bishopric of Augsburg , which also replaced the portion of the ownership enfeoffed by the Counts of Oettingen. From 1627 Donaualtheim was under the Ammanamt Schretzheim and after 1789 the care office Wittislingen . In 1783, the Augsburg bishopric gained not only the lower jurisdiction but also the high jurisdiction in Donaualtheim. 1803 came the place with the secularized Hochstiftsgebiet to the Electorate of Bavaria .

The formerly independent municipality became a district of the large district town of Dillingen on the Danube through the municipal reform on May 1, 1978 .

Population development

Around 1560 Donaualtheim consisted of 14 farms, one Hube and 74 Sölden . Then there was the castle , an inn, a mill and a fish fief. In 1818 Donaualtheim consisted of 96 houses and in 1961 180 houses.

In recent years it has been a branch of the Angelina Egger primary school.
