Steinheim an der Donau is a district of the large district town of Dillingen an der Donau .

Geographical location

Steinheim is located in the west of Bavaria in the administrative district of Swabia. The place is about four kilometers from the city center of Dillingen. The next larger conurbation is Augsburg and is easily accessible approx. 50 km southeast of Steinheim. The Danube flows south past the place, while the Egau flows through the whole place.

history

Archaeological finds from the Mesolithic indicate that the Celts and the Romans were already at home here. However, today's place dates from the time of the Alemanni . The place was first mentioned in 1118 after it fell to the Reichenbach monastery . In the Middle Ages, the Reichenbach monastery in Steinheim established a provost's office , which fell to Pfalz-Neuburg in 1556 . In the turmoil of the Reformation, the community often changed its religious affiliation. This changed, however, when Steinheim was assigned to the Augsburg bishopric in 1625 . During the secularization , the Augsburg bishopric was dissolved and the place was annexed to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

Independence ended on May 1, 1978, and the municipality was awarded to the city of Dillingen as part of the municipal reform , after the citizens had previously decided in favor of Dillingen and against Höchstädt an der Donau .

The place had the greatest expansion in the 1990s and 2000s. The place now has around 1500 inhabitants.

Catholic Parish Church of the Purification of Mary

The construction of the church, which was designed as a fortified church, began around 1200. The lowest floors of the tower date from this time. In the 17th century the church got its present appearance. In 1776, Prince-Bishop Clemens Wenzeslaus had the nave lengthened by four meters to the west. His coat of arms is on the ceiling between the chancel and the nave. The furnishings come from JM Pertenrieder and are designed in the Rococo style. The well-known painter Matthäus Günther created the frescoes .
