Kel Ahaggar (also: Ihaggaren ; tuareg-Berber ⴽⴻⵍ ⴰⵃⴰⴳⴳⴰⵔ ) are a group of Tuareg , mostly nomads , who live in southern Algeria .

distribution

The habitat of the Kel Ahaggar is in the Ahaggar Mountains . The northernmost extension of their territory extends in the north over the Teffedest Mountains to Arak . In the south they cross the state border with Niger , as important grazing areas for camels are in the Tamesna plain , northwest of the Ingall oasis and between Adrar des Ifoghas and Aïr . Kel Ahaggar live in particular between In-Abangarit and Tegguida-n-Tessoum . The Kel Ahaggar group is estimated at 5000 people. They speak Tahaggart , a dialect of Tamascheq.

Economy and Social

The Ahaggar Mountains, which are the highest in the Sahara after the Tibesti in northern Chad , act like a reservoir of water. For this reason, the Tuareg encounter usable vegetation in the valleys and can cultivate smaller, agriculturally sustainable oases. Most of all, crops are grown. In earlier times the Kel Ahaggar left the work of cultivating the fields mostly to the sedentary Haratins and slaves . As far as Kel Ahaggar have settled in the mountain regions themselves, they grow grain, fruit and vegetables. Date palms do not thrive here due to the low temperatures, but fig and olive trees grow.

There is an increasing tendency for individual groups of the Kel Ahaggar to give up their nomadic life and to become permanently settled. The political unrest in northern Algeria since the early 1990s has brought with it considerable waves of immigration from Arabs to the home of the Kel Ahaggar ( Tamanrasset ). African migrants from sub-Saharan countries join them. The Kel Ahaggar are developing into a minority in their own region. The Abalessa oasis , located west of Tamanrasset and traditionally functioning as a supraregional connection point, is located on the periphery. The typical, network-like social structure is increasingly imbalanced.

Tribes

The Kel Ahaggar are divided into different tribes. The most important are the Aït Loaien , Dag Rali , Iregenaten , Kel Rela , Kel Silet , Taituq and Tégéhé Millet .

Neighboring Tuareg

Neighbors of the Kel Ahaggar are the Kel Ajjer in the northeast . Originally there was a political unit with them. However, this was given up in the 17th century. The Kel Aïr and Kel Ewey live in the transition area to the Sahel around the Nigerian Aïr Mountains . In the west, towards the border with Mali, the Kel Adrar and Kel Iforas nomad around the Adrar des Iforas .
