The neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (NCAM1), also CD56, is a surface protein from the group of cell adhesion molecules .

NCAM1 mediates cell contact between neurons and is a cell adhesion molecule on the pre- and postsynaptic membrane. It is involved in the formation of neurites and in the learning process. NCAM1 is glycosylated and phosphorylated with polysialic acids . NCAM1 belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily with five immunoglobulin - protein domains to bind to NCAM on top of each other synaptic membrane and two fibronectin domains of type III, associated with neurite outgrowth. The sialylation is essential for binding to other NCAM. At least 27 alternatively spliced mRNA are produced by NCAM in the brain of rats . The three most important isoforms of NCAM1 are a variant with a GPI anchor but without a transmembrane domain of around 120 kDa and two isoforms with a transmembrane domain of around 140 and 180 kDa (kilodaltons) .

NCAM1 is the cellular receptor of the rabies virus for binding to the cell surface.
