Neurogenin3 (ngn3) is a transcription factor that belongs to the group of helix-loop-helix transcription factors .
Neurogenin3 is in the formation of nerve cells (neurogenesis) and in the system of the pancreas expressed . In the pancreas, ngn3 is the primary key factor for the differentiation of all endocrine cell types of the islets of Langerhans from the epithelial progenitor cells . The highest concentrations are found in the phase of early organogenesis of the pancreas, it decreases significantly towards birth and in the pancreas of adults it is almost zero.
The gene coding for ngn3 is located on chromosome 10 in humans .
