Lawrence Venuti (born February 9, 1953 in Philadelphia ) is an American English scholar , translation scholar and translator with Italian roots. He teaches as a university professor of English at Temple University , College of Liberal Arts, Department of English in Philadelphia.

Life and academic career

Lawrence Venuti graduated from Temple University with a bachelor's degree in 1974. He lived in New York City for many years , where he obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1980. graduated in English. From 1980 to 1987, Venuti Assistant Professor (Assistant Professor), and then from 1987 to 1992 adjunct professor (associate professor) at Temple University. From 1990 to 1992, Venuti served as Director of Creative Writing Program and from 1992 to 1997 as Director of Graduate Studies at Temple University. Since 1993 Venuti has taught as Professor of English at Temple University. Venuti also works as a translator from Italian, French and Catalan into English.

Teaching

Today Venuti teaches as a university professor in the English department at Temple University. He was also a lecturer in creative writing at the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University . There Venuti held three seminars in literary translation, each in the fall semesters 2006, 2008 and 2009. In addition, he was visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania (in spring 2005), Columbia University, University of Trento, at the Center for Intercultural Studies of the Johannes Gutenberg- University of Mainz, at Barnard College, Columbia University (April 2011) and at Queen's University Belfast. In 1999 he received a teaching position from the prestigious Fulbright program Fulbright Senior Lectureship in translation studies at the University of Vic in the Catalan city of Vic (Spain).

Theories and criticism

Venuti is one of the most famous translation scholars worldwide. His theories and opinions often differ greatly from the theories of other translatologists and are considered controversial.

He is also a critic of translatology . In his 1995 monograph The Translator's Invisibility: A History of Translation , for example, Venuti criticizes the fact that translators too often remain invisible and advocates that translators should be more visible, e.g. B. by publishing the name of the translator. This work sparked a debate in translation studies from the start.

In this book he explains his theory that the prevailing in the Anglo-American translation strategy of domesticating translating ( domesticating translation ), which with the liquid Translate ( fluent translation goes hand in hand), invisibility ( invisibility ) contributing the translator. Fluent translation is a translation strategy that aims to adjust or remove linguistic and cultural differences between the source and target culture in order to make the target text more fluid. Venuti's theories have been analyzed by many translatologists. He has been criticized by Mary Snell-Hornby , Wiebke Sievers, Tarek Shamma, Maria Tymoczko and Anthony Pym, among others . The second revised edition (2008) of The Translator's Invisibility addresses the criticism and clarifies certain points of his theory. Venuti explains z. B. that domestication / foreignization are not binary opposites and alienation is not a linguistic and discursive strategy, but rather an ethical effect of a translation. In addition, he emphasizes that other opinions on this topic (e.g. by Friedrich Schleiermacher and Antoine Berman ) differ from his opinion.
