Anthony Pym

Anthony David Pym (* 1956 in Perth) is an Australian linguist and sociologist who is best known for his work in translation studies . He is Professor of Translation and Intercultural Studies at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona (Spain).

biography

Anthony Pym was born in 1956 in Perth , the capital of the Australian state of Western Australia . After attending Wesley College in Perth, he studied at Murdoch University (also in Perth), where he made his bachelor's degree (BA. Hons) in comparative literature in 1981 . Between 1983 and 1984 Pym Frank Knox was a fellow at the Institute for Comparative Literature at Harvard University in Cambridge (USA). He obtained his doctorate in sociology in 1985 at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (abbr. EHESS) in Paris. From 1992 to 1994, as a post-doctoral student at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , he carried out research in the field of translation history. In the same year he held a series of seminars on ethical behavior and translation at the Collège international de philosophie in Paris, which were revised in 2012 and summarized in a book in English. Since 1994 he has been Professor of Translation and Intercultural Studies at the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona.

Other functions and memberships

In addition to his professorship, Pym is also responsible for the Intercultural Studies Group . This research group at the University of Tarragona studies the understanding between different cultures with a special focus on new technologies. He also coordinates the university's doctoral program for translation and intercultural studies. Since 2010 he has been President of the European Society for Translation Studies , or ETS for short. In addition, Anthony Pym has been visiting scholar at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California since 2006 and Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University in South Africa since 2011 . He is also a partner of the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies).

Approach and research

Pym takes a sociological approach in his research into language mediation and intercultural relationships. Instead of defining translation as a mere linguistic act, Pym assumes that translation makes a significant contribution to the formation and reshaping of intercultural relationships and demands an approach that goes beyond the pure definition and investigation of linguistic equivalents. By focusing more on the translator as the person acting and less on texts, he was one of the first to change the perspective of looking at translation. One of his more recent research focuses is the investigation of the connection between the increasing need for translations and increasing globalization .
