Miriam Shlesinger

Miriam Shlesinger (born May 20, 1947 in Miami Beach , † November 10, 2012 ) was an American - Israeli linguist and interpreter .

Life

Shlesinger was born in Florida in 1947 . In 1964 she emigrated to Israel to study there. She received her bachelor's degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in musicology and linguistics of the English language. In the early 1970s, Shlesinger studied translatology at the Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan . From 1978 she worked as a teacher at the Institute for Translatology there. She received her master's degree in literature from Tel Aviv University in 1990 . She received her doctorate from Bar Ilan University, whose Institute of Translatology she headed from 2003 to 2007.

Shlesinger who conducted Language Policy Research Center (Research Center for Language Policy ) of Bar-Ilan University. There she developed the course Translation in the Community at the Language Policy Research Center , to give students who speak a minority language ( Arabic , Russian or Amharic ) basic knowledge for use as interpreters in everyday contexts (e.g. in hospitals , with authorities etc.) to convey.

On November 10, 2012, Shlesinger died of lung cancer .

Awards

The Copenhagen Business School awarded Shlesinger an honorary doctorate in 2001 . In 2007 she served as CETRA professor at the University of Leuven in Belgium and received the Danica Seleskovitch Prize in 2010 . In 2011 the Association of Israeli Translators honored Shlesinger for her life's work.
