Maria Tymoczko

Maria Tymoczko (* 1943 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American linguist and translation scholar from Slovakia. She teaches as a university professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the field of comparative literature .

biography

Tymoczko grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Her environment was strongly influenced by immigration, which is why at the age of 2½ she already spoke 3 languages: Italian, Slovak and English. She came into contact with translation at an early age and claims that her childhood had a strong influence on her view of translation. Her theoretical approaches can be related to those of Gideon Toury , Itamar Even-Zohar and André Lefevere . Her husband Thomas Tymoczko was a philosopher and her son Dmitri Tymoczko is a composer and music theorist.

After their schooling Tymoczko studied at Harvard University , first biochemistry , until she decided to literatures of the Middle Ages. In 1965 she received her BA , 1968 her MA and in 1973 she received her doctorate with a work on personal names in the Ulster cycle . She stayed at Harvard University until her PhD, and chose to continue pursuing an academic career. In 1974 she began her work at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In the following years she published a number of books, including "The Irish Ulysses", and gained international recognition. In 2002 she was invited to give annual lectures for the European research institution CETRA. Here she was also appointed CETRA professor.

Tymoczko's research focuses on translation studies, Hibernian studies , Celtic medieval literature and post-colonialism .
