Itamar Even-Zohar (born March 23, 1939 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli cultural scientist and emeritus professor at Tel Aviv University .

biography

Itamar Even-Zohar was born in Tel Aviv in 1939 . From 1961 to 1964 he studied philosophy and Hebrew at Tel Aviv University , where he received his BA summa cum laude in 1966 . In 1966 he began studying comparative literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and in 1967 he also graduated with honors from his MA . In the following years Even-Zohar also studied in Oslo , Copenhagen and Stockholm . In 1972 he received his doctorate from Tel Aviv University . Since 1966 he has worked as a lecturer at various universities and research institutes in Belgium , France , Iceland , Israel , Canada , the Netherlands , Norway , Portugal , Spain and the USA . In April 2014 he was elected honorary member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Itamar Even-Zohar is known for his research on the interactions between different cultures and the formation of cultures. One of his most important achievements is the development of the polysystem theory , with the help of which the dynamics and heterogeneity of culture are to be recorded. The Russian formalism of the 1920s served as his starting point .
