The Garden State Parkway is a toll highway in New Jersey , USA . It has a length of 277 km and crosses New Jersey from north to south. The parkway is officially signposted as New Jersey Route 444 .

Route

The parkway begins on the northern border of New Jersey and then runs west past the metropolitan area of New York . At Newark he crosses the New Jersey Turnpike ( Interstate 95 ), which leads from New York towards Philadelphia . The further route follows the Atlantic coast past Atlantic City to Cape May , a headland from which there is a ferry connection to Delaware . On this section, both lanes are often approx. 100–500 m apart.

history

The Parkway was built by the State of New Jersey between 1946 and 1957 to replace the old streets such as B. to relieve the US-9, which led through the city centers. The model for this was the New York State Thruway in the neighboring state of New York.

Toll system

Unlike the New Jersey Turnpike, the Parkway has an "open toll system". This means that the toll booths are not located at every exit, but at irregular intervals (sometimes also on the motorway). With this system, exits are easier and are therefore available in large numbers. The toll can be paid with normal coins and notes or with the EZPass, which electronically settles the toll when the toll booth is passed. Until January 1, 2009, the toll was also collected with special coins (tokens) that could be purchased in various values and quantities. This system was abandoned without replacement.
