New Penicuik House

New Penicuik House is a mansion in the Scottish town of Penicuik in the Midlothian Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The merchant John Clerk of Penicuik acquired the land on which a previous building called Newbiggin House was located in 1654. In 1761, James Clerk, 3rd Baronet, commissioned the modernization of Newbiggin House, which eventually led to its demolition and the rebuilding of the current one Penicuik House led. On June 16, 1899, a fire ravaged the manor house. The baronet then had the nearby stables of the property converted into a mansion, which is now known as New Penicuik House. As a successor to Penicuik House, it became the seat of the Clerk Baronets .

The mansion is located approximately 1.5 km southwest of Penicuik and 400 m from the west bank of the North Esk . It is designed in the Georgian style . The two-story building consists of four elongated wings that enclose an inner courtyard. The masonry consists of quarry stone roughly cut into blocks. A slender tower with a pointed helmet rises in the middle of the southwest-facing front, stylistically based on the architecture of James Gibbs . The entrance area below is designed with a portico with round arches . On the northeast side a massive pigeon tower with an octagonal floor plan is integrated into the structure. Its entrance is crowned by a gable and it closes with a high dome. Inside, a spiral staircase leads up. A total of 804 nest boxes are installed.
