Route description

State Route 17B between White Lake and Monticello.

From its endpoint at the junction with New York State Route 97 , State Route 17B climbs on a winding course out of the Delaware River Valley , much like the rest of the State Routes in this sparsely populated corner of New York State. New York State Route 52A , the first other state route that NY 17B meets, branches off eight kilometers north. New York State Route 52 connects a little further with NY 17B. Both streets run together for a few hundred meters, then NY 152 continues on its way south to Narrowsburg , while NY 17B travels east. The wide road in good condition leads through almost open farmland. After a further eleven kilometers, New York State Route 55 approaches from the north. Both roads run through White Lake for about 1200 meters together before they split again at a poorly developed intersection that forms the center of White Lake. It is the resort of Smallwood due south that in the summer months traffic increases here.

NY 17B sets the way for further eastward eleven kilometers away, before at the New York State Route 17 to the Monticello Raceway is reached at its western end.

history

Between Fosterdale and Monticello, State Route 17B follows the route of the old Newburgh-Cochecton Turnpike , which is followed elsewhere today by State Route 17 and, somewhat newer at Newburgh , New York State Route 17K .

NY 17B was established when the State Routes were renumbered in 1930 between Monticello and Callicoon and on the route of what is now New York State Route 97 between Callicoon and Hancock . The route was cut between 1938 and 1946 to its current western end point.
