Bethel is a place in the US state of New York , in Sullivan County .

The place became famous through the 1969 Woodstock Festival held on pasture fields in the White Lake district .

At the 2010 census, the population was 4,255.

According to the United States Census Bureau , Bethel has a total area of ​​233.0 km². 220.8 km² of this is land and 12.2 km² (5.24%) is water. The place is near several lakes. These include White Lake, Kauneonga Lake, Silver Lake, and Lake Superior, the latter being part of the state park of the same name.

history

The first settlers arrived near what is now the Bethel and White Lake parishes around 1795. The city of Bethel was formed in 1809 from parts of the city of Lumberland. In the middle of the 19th century, the tourism industry began to grow. Bethel was home to several hotels that were part of the Borscht Belt and numerous Sleepaway Camps , including Camp Ma-Ho-Ge, Camp Chipinaw, and Camp Ranger - all on Silver Lake during the 20th century .

Bethel first appeared on the world map in 1969 when nearly half a million people met near Max Yasgur's farm for 3 days of peace and music. Made in 1970 about the Woodstock Festival, the documentary features interviews with several Bethel residents, including Art Vassmer, co-owner of Vassmer's general store in Kauneonga Lake. In 2006, Bethel Woods opened in the original Woodstock location as a modern performing arts venue.
