New York State Route 215 ( NY 215 ) is a north-south state route that is entirely within Cortland County . It has a length of ten kilometers and extends from the junction with NY 392 in Virgil to the junction with NY 13 in Cortland . NY 215 is largely a rural road, with the exception of the last half a mile in Cortland. The entire route of NY 215 was originally part of New York State Route 90 . In the early 1980s, NY 90 north of its intersection with US Highway 11 (US 11) in the Village of Homer was canceled. The former route south of it was designated as NY 215 and NY 392, and in some places reference markings are still located as NY-90.

Route description

NY 215 begins at the intersection with NY 392 in the hamlet of Virgil within the town of the same name . NY 392 leads from the south into this junction and exits it in an easterly direction, while NY 215 is directed northwards and takes its way parallel to Virgil Creek through the rural and hilly area of the town. Virgil Creek rises just south of the border with the Town of Cortlandville ; NY 215 continues up the ridge and then down into Cortlandville, being a sweeping town beyond the City of Cortland , the surrounding valley of the Tioughnioga River , which houses the town and the nearby Village of Homer .

The route reaches the valley floor and passes a section with some development just outside the city limits, which are the first buildings on the road to the north. The development in Cortland will then become more dense and the street will be named Owego Street . As such, NY 215 continues to the intersection with Tompkins Street , where the route ends at NY 13. This intersection is approximately 400 meters southwest of Downtown Cortlands and approximately 800 meters southeast of the State University of New York at Cortland campus . NY 215 is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) between NY 392 and the Cortland city limits ; the remainder of the north of the city limits is under city administration.

history

The north-south highway connecting Virgil to Cortland was originally part of NY 90 . This route was re-designated when the State Routes were renumbered in New York in 1930 between Messengerville in the south and Montezuma via Virgil and Cortland. On April 1, 1981, ownership and maintenance of a route between NY 90 in Virgil and the county line between Tompkins County and Cortland Counties was transferred from Cortland County to New York State. After the transfer, NY 90 was abandoned south of the intersection with US 11 in the Village of Homer north of Cortland. The former course of NY 90 between Virgil and Cortland was re-designated as NY 215, while the Virgil – Messengerville section became part of NY 392, which extends westward into Tompkins County.
