New York State Route 238 ( NY 238 ) is a 15.49 km state highway in western New York , United States. It runs in a northwest-southeast direction with the Village of Attica roughly in the middle of the route. In a northwesterly direction it connects Attica in Darien to US Highway 20 (US 20) and serves as a direct connection to eastern Erie County , where the US 20A in Orangeville provides the most direct connection to Warsaw , the county seat of Wyoming County . NY 238 was designated as a highway in 1930 when the state highways in New York were renumbered between Orangeville and Attica. The extension to Darien took place the following year.

Route description

NY 238 south of the Village of Attica, viewed northward

NY 238 begins at the intersection with US 20A in a part of the Town of Orangeville known as Halls Corner. It leads north as Halls Corners Road and leads through sparsely populated areas of the town. The route turns slightly northwest on Buffalo Road and reaches the Town of Attica . At the city limits, the NY 238 passes one of Attica's reservoirs and reaches the small hamlet of Attica Center, where the route meets the southern end of County Route 42 (CR 42) and the eastern terminus of CR 39. After leaving the Attica Center, NY 238 meanders north to the Village of Attica, past the eastern edge of the Attica and Wyoming Correctional Facilities - the farms of these facilities are most visible.

Directly inside the Village, NY 238 turns west and takes East Main Street from CR 19 at the intersection at Attica Central Middle and High Schools. NY 238 continues through the village, initially through largely quiet residential areas, before it reaches the business district and the northern end point of CR 31 (Exchange Street). After another three blocks, the road descends into the valley of Tonawanda Creek and meets NY 98 on High Street. NY 238 turns north into Market Street and follows it together with NY 98 for half a kilometer to Buffalo Street, where NY 238 turns northwest and leads along Buffalo Street out of the Village and into Genesee County .

NY 238 south in Darien

In Genesee County, NY 238 cuts through the southwest corner of the Town of Alexander and then reaches the Town of Darien . The route follows the Southern Tier Line operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway through this mostly rural area. The CR 45 follows a good part of this section parallel to NY 238 on the other side of the railway line. The CR 45 branches off from the NY 238 just outside Attica and meets it again after about three kilometers in Darien. That is why the CR 36 was divided in order to save the maintenance of a level crossing. After the western end point of the CR 45, the NY 238 takes a more northerly direction and reaches its end point in a residential area on US 20 in the hamlet of Darien.

history

NY 238 was set on its current route between Orangeville and Attica as part of the renumbering of the State Highways in New York in 1930 . It was extended northwest to Darien in 1931. The section of NY 238 between Attica and Darien originally followed Attica Road (today's CR 45) and crossed the railway line now known as the Southern Tier Line twice. NY 238 was moved to its current, more northerly route in 1978 and completely avoids crossing the railway line.
