New York State Route 299 is a short but important state route that lies entirely within Ulster County in New York , United States . It is 19.94 km long and connects the New York State Thruway at New Paltz with the frequented destinations in the Shawangunk Ridge in the west and with Poughkeepsie in the east. Only the eastern section of the road is a state route, between Shawangunk and New Paltz it is a county road of Ulster County.

Route description

NY 299 branches off the overlapping highways US Highway 44 and New York State Route 55 in Gardiner , just below the cliffs of Mohonk Preserve , a popular climbing area. The route meanders through the woods towards New Paltz. Less than two kilometers from the western end, drivers heading west have a good view of the Mohonk rocks. The section between US 44 and the intersection with Ulster County Route 7 (Libertyville Road) is also signposted as Ulster County Route 8. From the intersection with Libertyville Road to the junction on Springtown Road just west of the bridge over the Wallkill River , NY 299 is also signposted as Ulster County Route 7. From the west end to this bridge, NY 299 is maintained by Ulster County. It is one of three Ulster County State Routes maintained this way - the other two are New York State Route 213 (Ulster County Route 4) between US Highway 209 and New York State Route 28A and a section of NY 28A, which includes parts of Ulster County Routes 50 and 51.

Downtown New Paltz

The forests are replaced by fields and the State Route leads into the floodplain of the Wallkill River. The route crosses the river on the western edge of New Paltz. NY 299 heads north over Huguenot Street , a National Historic Landmark and the oldest continuously inhabited white settlement in Anglo-America. After a slight climb and a few blocks further, you will find the north end of New York State Route 208 and begin an overlap of several hundred meters with New York State Route 32 .

This section of the road is often congested and the proximity of the State University of New York at New Paltz results in a lack of parking space. The atmosphere of a typical college town can be seen in the clubs and restaurants along the street.

On the eastern edge of the village, at New Paltz Middle School, NY 32 turns south and NY 299 continues east. The street widens as it leaves the lively center of town behind and takes on the character of an arterial road lined with commercial buildings with fast-food restaurants , supermarkets and gas stations . Finally the driveway to the New York Thruway is reached and the development is thinning.

State Route 299 east of New Paltz

The eastern section of the State Route is a two-lane country road with turn-off lanes at some intersections, and there are traffic lights at the junctions of Ohioville Road (Ulster County Road 22A), South Street (Ulster County Road 22) and Old New Paltz Road (12 Ulster County Road and original NY 299 route). NY 299 also crosses Riverside Road (Ulster County Road 15). NY 299 then continues straight through partially undeveloped area until it ends in Lloyd on US Highway 9W north of Highland . The Mid-Hudson Bridge is about four kilometers south of this intersection.
