New York group

The "New Yorker Group" ( Ukrainian Literary Association, Ukrainian Нью-Йоркська група , translit .: Nju-Jorkska hrupa) was an association of Ukrainian authors in exile in New York . The group was founded on December 20, 1958 by the authors Patricia Kylyna, Bohdan Boičuk and Jurij Tarnawsky. They decided to call themselves "New Yorker Group" and to publish an annual literary anthology under the title "New Poetry". The first anthology appeared in 1959.

The following 7 poets belonged to the association: Emma Andijewska , Jurij Tarnawskyj , Wira Wowk , Bohdan Rubtschak , Schenja Wassylkiwska , Patricia Nell Warren and Bohdan Boitschuk .

The "New York Group" was an energetic explosion within a multitude of multi-talented groups of the "sixties generation".

All members of the association were in exile , but not all of them in New York. What they had in common was the pursuit of absolute freedom of art, a strong understanding of their own historical mission on earth, and the belief that the poet should not serve the people, but rather shape the people's literature, i.e. in part the people themselves .

The poetry was based on the principle of aesthetics - starting from a national oral poetry up to the then current search for modern and postmodern literature . Literary thoughts should overcome the path from the beginning of history and culture to the present with its burning questions.

The yearbook of poetry was published until 1979. The last edition was a double edition (12 to 13) for the years 1970 to 1971. In addition to works by the artists themselves, the editions also contained translations, for example of modern classics and authors of the older generation (Wasyl Barka, Vadim Lesy).

The composition of the group later changed. Ženja Wasilkiwska and Patricia Kylyna ended their literary activities, while new poets of the younger generation joined the group: Roman Babowal , Jurij Kolomyjez , Oleh Kowerko , Marko Zarynnyk , Jurij Solowij and the translator Wolfram Burkhardt. Marija Rewakowytsch joined the association as the last member .

From today's literary perspective, the “New York Group” is understood as a historical literary phenomenon that was closely linked to the development of Ukrainian literature in the 1960s. (J. Rosumnyi)
