The castle in context with the port facilities

Newark Castle is a castle in the Scottish city of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The facility is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

By marriage, the lands on the Firth of Clyde came into the possession of the Maxwell clan in 1402 . In 1478 George Maxwell built a tower house on this site, which is the nucleus of Newark Castle. The structure was called "Newwerk" or "Newark" ("New (construction) work"). It is known from 1495 that the Scottish King James IV stayed there. Under the laird Patrick Maxwell , the castle was expanded from the 1580s. Parts of the old building also seem to have been torn down. The work was likely completed between 1597 and 1599. Later no significant changes were made, so that today the castle essentially corresponds to this state. In the 18th century, Newark Castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. It is now owned by Historic Scotland . Formerly the city of Port Glasgow, derived from the castle, was known as Newark .

description

The castle on the banks of the Firth of Clyde is one of the most important secular structures from this period in Scotland. The renaissance building consists of red sandstone and encloses three sides of an inner courtyard. The original Tower House occupies the southeastern part. The parts of the building that were built in the 16th century were connected to the older structure and form a unit. The windows and entrance openings are suspected of having ornate cornices . Crowd watchtowers protrude from the building edges . The gables are made as a stepped gable . For a long time Newark Castle was obscured by the surrounding docks.
