Next is a novel by Michael Crichton . The original edition was published under the same title in 2006 by Harper Collins Publisher. The German hardback edition was published in 2007, the paperback edition in August 2008. A Spanish paperback edition was also published in 2009.

Frank Burnet's cell lines are worth $ 3 billion. But he was defrauded of the money from the LA University Clinic, which sold these cells to BioGen Research Inc., a genetic engineering company. After a few weeks, these immune cells are contaminated by an unknown person . BioGen is threatened with bankruptcy, so they have no choice but to take tissue from Mr. Burnet again. But Burnet flees.

criticism

With this novel, Crichton wants to look at criticism of genetic tests from different angles and describes this. Most of Crichton's criticism, however, is contained in the epilogue. There he addresses issues such as genetic patents and research bans and calls for clear guidelines, e.g. B. something like a gene law.
