Black fog , also called " Those Eating Their Dead ", (orig. Eaters of the Dead ) is a 1976 novel by the American writer Michael Crichton .

action

The year 922: Ibn Fadlān travels north as a representative of the Caliph of Baghdad to get in touch with the King of Saqaliba .

But before he arrives, he meets the mighty warrior Buliwyf in a Viking village and experiences the traditional burial of a deceased leader.

One day a young messenger from King Rothgar comes and reports that the land is being ravaged by monsters. These monsters come with the fog and eat people.

A fortune teller announces that only thirteen warriors will be able to defeat the evil that comes with the mist. However, the thirteenth warrior cannot be a Viking. The warriors are chosen after the 12 moons, among them Buliwyf. Ibn Fadlān is reluctantly named 13th warrior and travels with the twelve warriors to Scandinavia until they come to the kingdom of Rothgar. Soon after, the thirteen warriors face an uncanny superiority.

background

The Arab traveler Ibn Fadlān became known for his detailed account of an encounter with Swedish Vikings or Varangians on the Volga, including a ship burial, which Michael Crichton used as a novel. He mixed the historical travelogue with elements of the Beowulf epic, to which the figure of Buliwyf refers. Crichton adopted the style of the report for his novel to add authenticity to the story .

filming

The book was filmed in 1999 under the direction of John McTiernan as " The 13th Warrior ", with Antonio Banderas as Ibn Fadlān and Vladimir Kulich as Buliwyf.
