Neyveli is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .
The city is part of the Cuddalore district . Neyveli has township status .
history
In 1935 the presence of black particles was discovered and the analysis led to the discovery of brown coal reserves under the soil in and around the then village of Neyveli. The Neyveli Lignite Corporation was established as a corporation by the Indian government in 1956, and the mining of lignite began in 1962. The first power plant was commissioned in 1962 with the support of the Soviet Union .
Demographics
The city's population is 105,731 according to the 2011 census. Neyveli has a gender ratio of 980 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 90.42% in 2011. Almost 89% of the population are Hindus , around 8% are Muslims and around 3% are Christians . 6.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

economy
The economy is based on the lignite mines and the associated thermal power plants. Other smaller industries are the cultivation and processing of cashew nuts , brick making, weaving and agriculture .
Infrastructure
Public transport within the community is managed by NLC India Limited and has two bus stops with connections to outstations. Neyveli has a train station on the Cuddalore - Salem railway line with daily passenger trains .
