Sword with a rectangular scabbard

The Ngombe sword is a traditional sword or knife from Central Africa . Mainly the weapon is ascribed to the Ngombe but also to the Poto and Doko and partly to the Ndunga and Budja . It is known by the local names ingonda and mopamba .

description

The Ngombe sword has a broad, straight, double-edged blade. Particularly noticeable are the incisions on the blade neck or ricasso and, if applicable, in the middle of the blade. The total length is about 50 to 80 cm. The knob of the handle is partly provided with a balloon-like fur cover. In the balloon there should be magical substances that should protect the wearer. The handles are often wrapped with ribbons made of copper , brass or rattan . The wooden scabbards for the weapons are rectangular in shape and are often ornately decorated with animal skin, braiding made of plant fibers or metal nails. Mainly used as a prestige object and a sign of dignity for the chiefs.
