Nguyễn Du ( Hán tự : 阮 攸; * 1765 in Bích Câu, Thang Long ; † 1820) was a Vietnamese poet and writer . He was born in Bich Cau, Thang Long, in 1765 into an ancient aristocratic scholar and mandarin family. His father Nguyễn Nghiễm was Prime Minister at the court of the kings in Thăng Long ( Hanoi ) and had eight wives and 21 children.

His best-known work is Truyện Kiều (傳 翹, literally: The story of the Kiều ;, original title: Đoạn Trường Tân Thanh,斷腸 新 聲), the story of the beautiful girl who sells herself to save her father. With its 3254 verses in the form of verse Lục bát, it is still one of the classics of Vietnamese literature , is regarded as a national epic and is standard reading material in Vietnamese schools. Like many works of the 18th century, it was written in the Chữ Nôm script . It is based on the novel Jin Yun Qiao zhuan (金 雲 翹 傳, Vietnamese Kim Vân Kiều) by Qingxin Cairen (青 心 才 人, Vietnamese Thanh Tâm Tài Nhân), written in Classical Chinese .
