Niall, Earl of Carrick

Niall mac Dhonnchaidh (also Níall mac Donnchadha , Niall of Carrick or Neil of Carrick ) († 1256 ) was the second Mormaer / Earl of Carrick .

Niall was the eldest son and successor to Donnchadh, Earl of Carrick . After his father's death in 1250, he followed him as Earl of Carrick. In 1255 he supported Alan Durward when he was under the age of King Alexander III. the government led by Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith overthrew. Carrick became a member of the new fifteen-member Regency Council.

In 1234 Carrick had married Margaret , daughter of Walter Fitzalan, Steward of Scotland . He had at least one daughter with her:

This became his heir in Carrick, which was initially placed under royal administration. The annual income from Niall's properties is said to have been around £ 170 at the time. Carrick had appointed his nephew Lachlann to be the leader of his clan ( ceann ceneóil ) , who took on both military and legal functions.
