Jacques Baumel

Jacques Baumel (born March 6, 1918 in Marseille , † February 17, 2006 in Rueil-Malmaison ) was a French politician .

Resistance fighters

After studying medicine, Baumel became part of the Resistance during World War II and led the fighting in Marseille. In 1943 he was General Secretary of the United Resistance Movement. In 1945 he co-founded the Union démocratique et socialiste de la Résistance and sat in the Provisional National Assembly . In the first constituent national assemblies he represented the departments of Moselle and Creuse , but lost his seat in the election for the National Assembly in 1946. In 1947 he took part in the founding of the Rassemblement du peuple français .

From 1959 to 1967 Baumel was a senator and temporarily deputy general secretary of the Union pour la Nouvelle République . In 1960 he visited the USA and watched the election campaign of John F. Kennedy . After the union of the Gaullist UNR-UDT, he held the office of Secretary General from 1962 to 1967. Between 1967 and 2002 he was a member of the National Assembly for nine terms. In the cabinet of Prime Minister Jacques Chaban-Delmas , he was State Secretary from June 20, 1969 to July 5, 1972. In addition, he represented the interests of the French National Assembly in several parliamentary societies.

mayor

Between 1971 and 2004 Baumel was also Mayor of Rueil-Malmaison . There he ran an active urban development policy with partnerships with 19 cities. In 2002 a media library with his name was inaugurated. For twelve years (1970–1982) Baumel was also President of the General Council of Hauts-de-Seine .

Awards

For his services Baumel was awarded the Médaille de la Résistance , the Croix de guerre and the Croix de la Liberation .
