Niall Williams

Niall Williams (born August 6, 1958 in Dublin , Ireland ) is an Irish writer and playwright .

Life

Williams studied English and French Literature at University College Dublin , where he graduated with a Master's degree in Modern American Literature. In 1980 he moved to New York City , where he married Christine Breen , whom he met while still a student. He found his way through various positions in New York City, for example as a copywriter for Avon Publications . In 1985 he went back to Ireland with his wife, who was also a writer.

Williams wrote his first four books, which describe their life in Kiltumper in County Clare in western Ireland, with his wife Christine Breen. This was followed by his first play, which premiered in 1991 at the Abbey Theater in Dublin. In 1995 his second play was performed there on the Peacock Stage , followed by a third play in 1999 in Galway at the Druid Theater .

Since 1997 Williams has published a number of novels, some of which have received attention, three of which have been translated into German.

Williams worked as a mentor for literature students at Carlow University in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania and was previously the writer-in-residence of County Sligo, Ireland for two years . He continues to live with his family in the west of Ireland in County Clare.
