Nicholas Penny

Sir Nicholas Penny FBA FSA (born December 21, 1949 ) is an English art historian and museum curator .

Nicholas Penny studied at St Catharine's College , Cambridge and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London , where he received his PhD in 1975. From 1975 to 1982 he taught art history at Manchester University . He then worked at King's College in Cambridge. From 1980 to 1981 he was " Slade Professor of Fine Art " at Oxford University . He was the curator of the Western Art Department at the Ashmolean Museum .

Since 2000 he has been "Andrew W. Mellon Professor" at the National Gallery of Art's Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts . In 2002 he was appointed Senior Curator of Sculpture at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC . From 2008 to 2015 he was director of the National Gallery in London .

He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2007 . In 2015 he received the accolade as a Knight Bachelor .
