Life

Nicolás Mihanovich

In 1860 Nikola Mihanović, who was born in a small Dalmatian coastal village , emigrated to Latin America like many other Croatians. First he settled in Paraguay , later in Buenos Aires. In 1879 he founded a steamship company for river shipping in Argentina . Around 1900 he owned around 200 steamers (mostly river boats ), making him the largest shipowner in Latin America. He was considered the king of river shipping from the Atlantic over the Río Paraná and Río Uruguay to Paraguay and the center of Brazil . Mihanovich promoted immigration from Croatia with his own seagoing vessels. He supported Croatian settlers and was also active as a patron. By Emperor Franz Joseph I. Mihanovich became the Baron raised; he was also honored by the Russian tsar and the English and Spanish kings.

In 1926 and 1962 two Yugoslav ships were named after him.

society

In 1907 the company was converted into a stock corporation. Since 1909 it came under the influence of British investors and was known as The Argentine Navigation Company (Nicolás Mihanovich) Ltd. registered in London , although Mihanovich still owned 70 percent of the shares. At that time, the company owned 350 steamers with a crew of 5,000 and its own repair yard. The fact that Mihanovich, as a citizen of Austria-Hungary, owned shares in a British shipping company, led to a conflict of interests in World War I and to the sale of his shares.
