The Niedensteiner Tanzlinde , also known as the "dance and court linden tree", is a distinctive single tree in the small town of Niedenstein in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse .

The dancing linden tree in Niedenstein
The foot of the trunk

The mighty tree, a summer lime tree ( Tilia platyphyllos ) with a circumference of approx. 8 m, guided over a wooden frame and protected as a natural monument , stands about 40 m outside the former lower city gate , the Untertor or “Wichdorfer Tor”, immediately south of the corner Hauptstrasse / An der Linde. It probably dates from the time the city was founded in the 13th century and was probably originally the place of jurisdiction of the city court. Later, the tree was used as a dancing linden tree, but not under the tree, as is usually the case, but rather like the dancing linden tree in Sachsenbrunn on a platform built into the tree.

The mighty trunk, which actually consists of three gnarled trunks, branches at a height of one to two meters into six strong, partly almost horizontally grown and wide branches. This low height made it practically impossible to dance under the tree, but the strength of the horizontal branches enabled the installation of an additional dance floor supported by strong wooden supports for the musicians and dancers in the branches. As a historical photograph from 1906 shows, a staircase led up to the platform, which in turn was secured by a railing. A strong branch protruded through the center of the dance floor and was surrounded by a table and benches. The last repair of the dance floor is documented for the year 1890. Up until the time before the First World War , people danced in the linden tree. It is not known when this happened the last time. The dance floor has disappeared.

An information board was placed on the support frame of the linden tree on the occasion of the city's 750th anniversary in 2004; it gives information about the history of the tree.
