The Niederösterreich-Radrundfahrt (Lower Austria Tour for short; Tour de la Basse-Autriche in French ) was a cycle stage race that was held in May in the Austrian state of Lower Austria from 1956 to 1995 . It emerged from the distance race Vienna - Gmünd -Wien and was held for the first time from May 19 to May 22, 1956. As a preparatory race for the Austria cycle tour and partly also for the “Tour de France des Ostens”, the Berlin-Prague-Warsaw Peace Tour , it was at times the highest sporting level among the Austrian cycle races. Numerous national teams and - since the separation of amateurs and professionals since 1992 - renowned professional teams took part. The total distance of the round trip, which had to be completed in four or five (with half-stages) stages, was usually between 600 and 700 kilometers. In accordance with the topography of Lower Austria, hilly sections or low mountain ranges dominated. Otto Vesely was a long-time timekeeper, whose archive of stage and overall results is now managed by the Austrian Cycling Association. Prominent winners were the 1988 Tour de Suisse winner, Helmut Wechselberger, and the amateur world champion and multiple Peace Ride winner Ryszard Szurkowski . Especially in the 1980s, the GDR, with Bernd Drogan and other world champions and Olympic champions, had multiple stage winners and overall winners of the Lower Austria Tour.
