history

It was founded in 1962 by Joel N. Myers , a Pennsylvania State University student who was working on a degree in meteorology at the time. His first client was a Pennsylvania gas company that paid him $ 150 for a three-month forecast of winter weather. While running his company, Myers became a member of his university's meteorological faculty. The company adopted the name AccuWeather in 1971. In 2006, AccuWeather acquired WeatherData , Inc. of Wichita, Kansas .

The city of Los Angeles sued the app "Weather Channel" in 2019 because it passed on customer and location data to third-party providers without consent. It became known that AccuWeather also stores position data even if the user had deactivated the location function in their settings. AccuWeather also sells the position data.

Products

AccuWeather claims to make its data available to over 180,000 third-party websites . The application programming interface of AccuWeather covers a wide range of parameters: from current weather to various forecasts and air quality.

AccuWeather operates a weather app. It is already preinstalled on the devices of some manufacturers.

AccuWeather Network

AccuWeather has operated its own cable and satellite channel with the AccuWeather Network since 2015. The station broadcasts live and pre-produced weather forecasts for parts of the USA around the clock. Studios and broadcasting are located at the company's headquarters in State College, Pennsylvania.
