The Niederrheinische Radwandertag is an event for cyclists that takes place in large parts of the Lower Rhine and partly in the neighboring Netherlands . It has been held annually since 1992 and falls on the first Sunday in July.

Participating cities and municipalities

The first event in 1992 was held by the cities of Krefeld , Tönisvorst , Viersen , Kempen and Grefrath . In the following years, other municipalities joined and in 1995 the event was held cross-border for the first time with the participation of the Dutch cities of Venlo and Roermond . As of 2016, the routes of the cycling day led through 72 cities and municipalities. The route network included almost the entire Lower Rhine region and extended into the Netherlands at various points.

concept

As of 2016, there were 70 routes as part of the cycling day, which led through 72 cities and communities. The shortest routes have a length of around 20 kilometers and are expressly intended as short routes, while the remaining routes are around 30 to 70 kilometers and sometimes go a little longer. The total length of all routes is around 3,000 kilometers. These are circular hiking trails, each of which offers an entertainment and cultural program as well as gastronomy at the start and finish points. At the start and finish locations, stamps will also be given for participants and raffles will be held for participants who can present stamps from three locations. In addition to various landscape forms, for example moated castles are among the attractions along the routes.

Number of participants

At the first event in 1992, around 2,300 participants were counted. This number already doubled in the following year, and with the increasing expansion of the event to the entire region, the number of participants rose to around 25,000 to 32,000 in the years around 2000. The event kept roughly the same size.
